FALCONER — Mayor James Jaroszynski took the first shot after the village’s new disc golf course was dedicated during a brief ceremony Tuesday evening. The disc flew about 20 yards to his immediate right and into the woods.

His second attempt didn’t fare much better.

However, after making some adjustments, Jaroszynski flung the disc in a straight line toward a metal basket situated much higher in a tree line.

Though just recently installed, the course already has received plenty of use — some by first-time players of the popular game and some by frequent disc golfers wanting to try out the county’s newest course.

“When the disc golf project was initially mentioned to myself and the board a couple of months ago, we first walked the proposed course with the Twin Tier Golf and members of our community that wanted to help get this project going, and I was truly impressed,” Jaroszynski said Tuesday after village officials, Rotary members and other organizers took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. “The course layout is exceptional, and I have personally seen its usage almost daily already.”

Disc golf, also referred to as Frisbee golf, is a sport growing in popularity in which players throw discs at a target, sometimes metal baskets, at the end of each hole. It is played using rules similar to golf.

The installation of Falconer’s course was funded by the Rotary Foundation and local Falconer Rotary Club. The total project was estimated to cost about $5,000.

“We would like to thank the Rotary Foundation, Rotary District 7090, the village of Falconer Board of Trustees and Twin Tier Golf, Rich Longer and Andrew Faulkner, and everyone who was involved in installing the course,” Rotary member Nina Gustafson said. “The Falconer Rotary Club is proud of the long-standing partnership we have with the village of Falconer, and we are happy to be able to gift this disc golf course to people of the community for their enjoyment for many years to come.”

Scott Marcin, governor for Rotary District 7090, was at Tuesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. He said the course fits with the Rotary’s mission to support neighborhoods.

“We want to have projects that have lasting impacts in our communities that will bring people together,” he said. “Rotary has an initiative for healthy communities, and we thing projects like disc golf courses allow people to come out into the parks, have a good hike. It’s a low-cost venture and it’s a lot of fun on top of it.”

Marcin said Rotary previously supported the installation of a disc golf course at a community center in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

There are other plans in place for Falconer Village Park. Jaroszynski noted the basketball courts have been resurfaced and corn-hole boards are scheduled to be installed with the help of village resident Ro Woodard, who brought the idea and Community Foundation grant notice to the village’s attention.

Based on feedback received from a recent survey, Falconer also is looking to add a pickleball court on the tennis courts. Other plans are being reviewed by Village Trustee Annette Miller, who oversees the Parks and Recreation Committee.

“These are all very exciting improvements for the Village Park,” the mayor said.

Following the ceremony at the park, Falconer Rotary held a picnic with food, drinks and ice cream.
